The Story Behind Savory Cafe
Mike Bowers and his wife, Nancy, lived in Hawaii for over 20 years. They want to share their lifestyle and philosophy with their guests. There is no dominant group in Hawaii that sets the cultural tone, since the islands represent a mix of Pacific islander, Asian and caucasian influences, making the food an amalgam of these influences. At Savory Cafe, our idea of paradise is a funky–fusion of dishes from the cultures of Mexico, the Mediterranean and Hawaii, keeping it all healthy, simple and Island fresh.
Chris Garrett opened The Savory Cafe doors to the Nye Beach community in May 2008. He offered a fresh and healthy way of restaurant eating for vegans and vegetarians. Mike Bowers joined The Savory Cafe as Garrett's partner in January 2009. Together they remodeled the kitchen to make room for the Montagne Hearth Bake Pizza oven that current resides there.
The partnership offered a new menu, bringing pizza and fresh–baked bread in addition to the vegetarian and vegan cuisine. Now guests can enjoy dine–in, take–out and delivery in the greater Newport area.
In June 2009, after month of learning the business and recipes from Garrett, Mike Bowers purchased Savory Cafe from Chris, and immediately started on a dining room remodel. Complete with surf photography from Hawaii and a new mural depicting the North Shore, Mike and Nancy would like to invite you to come and enjoy our peaceful atmosphere. Aloha!
